New Testament Assembly appoints new National Leader

The New Testament Assembly (UK) a leading Black Majority Church at its recent Annual General Meeting unanimously voted in Revd Delroy Powell as their new national leader. Revd Powell will succeed Bishop David W Greaves who has come to the end of his tenure.

Revd Powell, currently the Senior Pastor at the NTA headquarter church in Tooting, South London will bring to his new role a wealth of experience in church leadership and management having also served as Director and Trustee for various International and National organisations. The 54 year old, husband and father of three grown-up children, hopes to build on the foundation of his predecessors including his late Father Bishop Melvin Powell, who co-founded the organisation in 1961.

Revd Nezlin Sterling the retiring General Secretary of the New Testament Assembly who has worked closely with Revd Powell over a number of years welcome the appointment and had this to say: “Pastor Powell is a reflective and visionary leader who understands contemporary trends and the challenges that the church face in our time. His belief in the redemptive potential of the local church to promote change, spiritually and socially in the life of individuals, families and the community has raised the profile of NTA in recent years and forged new ways of the church working collaboratively with various public agencies”.

Revd Powell is widely respected for his efforts to network across different denominations and resolve to see greater unity in the body of Christ. He is a keen advocate for compassion and justice causes and lends his support to leading charity Christian Aid in raising awareness of the plight of the less privileged. When quizzed about his acceptance of the nomination, Revd Powell said: “It wasn’t an office I desired or was aspiring to but like David in the scriptures, I do sense that there is a cause and a need to step up to the challenge of preserving the spiritual legacy our forebears have entrusted to us. As well as preparing the future generation to navigate the unchartered waters of the times ahead.

“I am humbled by the support and encouragements received from my family, members, and friends beyond our organisation, and ask for your continual prayer”.

The Consecration of Bishop – Elect Revd Powell is due to take place on Saturday 24th August 2013 during the NTA National Conference.
